Summer is looking good this year. We have been working hard on potty training and daily living skills. I have been doing a lot of talking to my son. I have been letting him know that his dad and I expect him to start doing things that we know he can do. I have been telling him that I am not going to be giving him prompts nor am I going to repeat myself over and over again.
We are applying the award and take away system to everything. If he wets himself, he gets something taken away. If he uses the bathroom independently, he gets something back. If he doesn’t respond to requests, he gets something taken away. It might sound harsh, but it is working. He is responding better.
We have taken him out of pullups and he is now wearing underwear. We still have accidents. There are times when he has no problem getting himself to the bathroom without being reminded or told. Then there are times when he doesn’t want to be bothered. I have learned that we just have to keep at it. He is making progress and continues to everyday.
I like that he is doing more around the house, too. Some of the things that we have been trying so hard to get him to do, he is finally doing. For instance, he is starting to put his cup and plate/bowl in the sink after eating. He doesn’t do it every time, but he is starting to do it without being told. We are also working on cleaning his room and cooking. My little boy is making a lot of progress. I love it. He is so stubborn, though. One of the reasons that it takes us so long to get him to master a skill is because he doesn’t want to. Once he decides he will do it, then he will.
This summer is going to be spent getting him to realize that he needs to start being independent. He needs to do things on his own without prompts. There is so much that he wants to do in the future, and I tell him that the only way that will happen is if he starts doing things for himself now. I am really excited about the changes I have seen since school let out for the summer. It makes me hopeful for the future.
