There are times when you just run out of ideas. Moms want to do activities with their child that are easy to put together, and can be accomplished with materials around the house. We want to do activities that are geared toward helping specific areas of development, yet still be fun. I like to think that I am really good at adapting activities for my son, but there are a lot of times that I find myself drawing a blank.
I was sent the book 101 Games and Activities for Children with Autism, Asperger’s, and Sensory Processing Disorders, written by Tara Delaney, M.S., OTR. The book covers gross motor skills, fine motor skills, social sense, communication, school ready and more. Each game is presented to the reader with location for it (indoor or outdoor), equipment list, and how to implement it. The author also tells you what areas the activity addresses. I recommend this book for parents, teachers and therapists that are in need of new ideas.
I like how interactive the games are in this book. They really promote one on one purposeful play. As you go through the book, you can pick out the activities/games that are appropriate for your child. One of my favorites, is the Soapy Finds. This activity is done in the bathtub , makes use of bubbles and it’s purpose is to promote communication, shape and color recognition, and sensory. My son loves bubbles and being in the bathtub. He knows his shapes and colors, but he has difficulty selecting items when asked. I don’t know why, but it is an area we have to work on and this is a great setting to do so.
