Today, we had a breakthrough in speech therapy. He picked out a book that he loves, and that they have read a lot. It’s about a boy and his dog. The video below shows the beginning of the speech therapy session. In it, you will notice that he isn’t happy. He did not want to answer questions.
About ten minutes into the session, we noticed that he was trying to communicate to us. He was selecting pictures of what happens in the story, like he was telling it.
That was when we gave him the lead. At that point, I forgot about my camera and just enjoyed having him tell me the story with the pictures. We would ask him a question, here and there, and he would answer. His therapist and I were so excited, that we let the session go past it’s time.
My son was extremely happy to be “talking” to me about the book, instead of just answering questions. This is the first time that he has used independent (no facilitated) communication to carry on a conversation. I’m a very happy mommy. I think it’s time we spent more time working on the internet.
