Is Isles of Rizzoli & Isles an Asperger’s Syndrome Character?

It amazes me how many television shows give their characters “autistic traits.” The newest character that gets a lot of searches linked to autism is Maura Isles, of “Rizzoli & Isles.” I get several searches everyday to my site for people looking for information linking the character with autism. People are trying to figure out if Isles is on the spectrum, specifically, Asperger’s Syndrome.

I love this show, and watch it every week. Isles is an extremely intelligent woman. It’s obvious she has a high IQ and an incredible memory. Does this make her autistic? No, I don’t think so. Yes, she has a little difficulty at times with appropriate social conversation. That doesn’t mean that she is autistic. It just means that she may have spent most of her life with her head in books, and not much around people.

Intelligence is not an indicator of autism. Poor social skills, although common among autistic individuals, does not mean a person is autistic. The character Isles does have social skills, and is very good at reading Rizzoli’s mood, and sensitive to her friend’s state of mind.

I don’t think that Isles is an autistic character. But, that’s just my opinion.
