When I was in New York for BlogHer, I met Jodi with the California Strawberry Commission. She is super nice, and I enjoyed the chocolate covered strawberry that I was able to sample at the Dinner’s On Us Child’s Play party. I conducted a short interview with her via email. Here it is:
Can you give me a little background on how it was formed?
California strawberry growers came together in 1955 to pool resources to improve strawberry production with expanded research to develop new varieties and innovative growing practices. The goal was to pool their resources to build success as a group of passionate farmers, rather than as individuals. Today, the California Strawberry Commission represents 600 strawberry growers, shippers and processors in California, and is the nation’s leader in food safety training and education, sustainable production and research programs.
What would you say is the single most important role of the California Strawberry Commission?
Food safety is the top priority of the CSC. The California Strawberry Commission is an internationally recognized and award-winning leader in the produce industry in providing food safety training and education.
What makes California Strawberries different from any other?
California farmers adhere to the most stringent food safety regulations in the world. The reason strawberries grow so well here is because they like to grow in temperatures that people like to live in: not to warm, not too cool. The unique California coast provides these moderate temperatures with warm sunny days and cool foggy nights. This combination is ideal for growing sweet and flavorful strawberries that are available year-round across the nation.
