What Does the Future Hold For Your Autistic Child

What Does the Future Hold for Your Autistic Child?

This question always lingers in the back of my mind.  Our little 4 year old has a lot of life left (God willing), and to think of his future can be scary at times.  I recently was blessed to have a conversation with the principal at the school my two older children attend.

His 3 year old granddaughter was recently diagnosed with Asperger’s.  He was explaining to me that her dad told the doctor that he was going to start a fund for her future needs.  The doctor said, “The type of fund you need to start is a college fund.”

I was so incredibly impressed by how that doctor addressed the little girl’s father.  Though the thought of an autistic child going to college may seem out of reach, this doctor had faith that this little girl would one day do just that.  I cannot help but hold onto the hope of seeing my son with PDD-NOS achieve his goals-with the help of me as his mom giving him the encouragement he needs.

This conversation with my children’s principal changed the way I look at JJ.  I will now tell him he can do whatever it is he wants to do-instead of giving up on him just because he has this diagnosis!  I believe the sky’s the limit for him!  My attitude as his mom may actually determine what the future holds for him.  Have you ever thought about that?
