Kaplan Tutoring Test Drive Program

I was selected to participate in the Kaplan Test Drive Program by Mom Central. Kaplan is an online tutoring program for children in grades K-8. I opted into this review because my daughter has been struggling in school, and I wanted to see if this would help.

Before starting the online tutoring lessons, my 7 year old, second grader, daughter had to take a Pre-Skills test for Math and Reading. It took her a week to complete both of them. Before I saw the results, I thought she was struggling in Reading, but doing good in Math. I found out that it is actually the other way around. Here are the results of her Pre-Skills Test:

Reading: Grade 1 – 93% and Grade 2 – 5%

Math: Grade 1 – 83%

The reports break down how she did in each area, which skills she has mastered and which ones she needs to work on. I received more information from the results of her Pre-Skills test, than what I have ever received from any of her teachers.

The Kaplan Tutoring program isn’t all about work. Each time your child logs in, she earns points. These points can be saved up and used for virtual games or actual merchandise. My daughter has been having fun with the virtual worlds. She discovered a pet one that she is in love with. We have an understanding. First, she works. After that, she can play.

She started doing some math lessons and seemed to enjoy them. I watched her do a couple, and I was happy with the way that it focused on one of her problem areas, and was able to teach it to her in a way that she understood. Definitely better that I had been trying to explain it to her.

We will be working with this for 8 weeks. As she masters skills, she will be tested on what she has learned. At that point, new lessons will be available to address her needs. I will be writing another post about this towards the end of November.
