We were attending a family gathering at my grandmother’s house when it happened. I was in the kitchen, and my 11 year old nonverbal, autistic son came up to me and asked for a drink. I was shocked. His first words were to ask for a drink. I had given up on him ever talking.
I gave him a drink, and he ran off to play with his cousins after he drank it. Just before he ran off, he said “I love you, Mommy.” Those were the most beautiful words I have ever heard.
His voice was like an angels. My heart was full of joy. I watched him throughout the day, playing with his cousins. He was included in everything, accepted and loved. I was filled with joy to see how he was interacting with everyone. With words, came a complete change. No longer was there any signs of autism. I couldn’t believe it! I couldn’t keep my eyes off of him. I spent the day hovering, taking in the wonderful, miraculous change in my son.
At the end of the day, just before it was time to leave, he ran to me and gave me a big hug. He said “I love you.”
And then I woke up.

Sigh. I have that dream much too often. I always wake up sad and weepy. Even though I love him just the way it is, it’s still so hard!

I think we all have dreams like this one. And I don’t think any of us is giving up hope any time soon. Hugs to you, Tammy!!
