Eww, lice! School is starting up again soon, and the one call you don’t want to get is a phone call to come and get your child because the nurse has found nits on your child’s head.
By the time you process the information, get one (or four) different treatments, choke down the yuckiness of the situation – you realize that you need to be the grownup here and suck it up.
If you’ve ever looked up descriptions for lice, you’ll realize it’s actually hard to see nits on your child’s hair, and the lice themselves are only about the size of a sesame seed and maybe about half the size in width, a little like a black sliver.
Having lice can be traumatizing for any child and parent, but the process can be really, really difficult if you have a child with autism.
Here are a few tips:
You’ll want to emotionally prepare your child that this could happen to them even before school begins. Find out if any of their friends has had lice in the past and relay their friends experience. Stress that lice are treatable, and that getting rid of them isn’t painful, that should help cut down on any anxiety. If your child relates well to television shows there have been a number of them on in the past that deal with this (off the top of my head I remember a Nickelodeon cartoon “As Told By Ginger” that had an episode “Of Lice And Friends” for older kids and after some research I found an “Arthur” one called “The Lousy Week”).
Keeping a supply of Zippity Doo’s children’s daily use hair care products that help prevent lice in your home is that ounce of prevention that your Grandmother was talking about. Zippy Doo’s children’s hair care products serve to repel and help prevent the
infestation of lice and other insects. These pediatrician approved products are a natural option so that you don’t have to use harsh treatments after the fact.
At minimum the Shampoo and Conditioner for children will provide you with a first line of defense to create maximum protection against lice infestation.
If your child has physical sensory issues – washing and combing their hair multiple times to ensure all the nits and lice are gone can be an arduous task. It can take even longer if your child can’t sit through the rubbing, pulling and combing.
Since Zippity Doo’s prevent lice, when using their products hopefully you’ll never have to encounter that scenario. In addition to an alcohol –free styling gel (that will give you excellent control in styling their hair it seals and protects the hair as well), they also have a leave-in detangler, just spray on and combing through hair becomes a breeze. It moisturizes and eliminates frizziness all the while repelling those lice. For added protection the Shield Spray is safe to use on everything that might come in contact with spreading lice. From hats and helmets to hair accessories and pillow cases – it creates a gentle seal on surfaces from infestation.
The products have a very “outdoors-y” scent to them due to the natural products that they are made with. We love the shampoo the best, it cleans the hair very nice, and is gentle enough to use every day. That gives me surety to know that if we don’t have time to use the rest of the items, we at least have that first layer of “repel” on.
Thank you, Zippity Doo’s for creating (and letting me sample and share) your products, and for making the entire process of safekeeping our children from lice simple and amazing.
You can purchase Zippity Doo’s at retailers nationwide and in Canada as well as at Amazon.com and the products mrsp is $9.99 each.
