Recently, Wyatt Isaacs, Jack Black and Stephen Stills headlined the “Autism is Awesome” benefit concert in support of The Miracle Project.
Founded in 2004, THE MIRACLE PROJECT is a multi-platform socialization program that enables children and teens with autism and other special needs to express themselves through music, dance, acting, story, and writing. ALL children of ALL abilities grow in skill and in spirit while creating and performing in original musicals. Through its principles of acceptance and artistic expression, The Miracle Project is dedicated to empowering those living with autism. This acclaimed arts program was documented in the HBO double EMMY Award-winning documentary, AUTISM THE MUSICAL.
Following five LA children over the course of six months, director Tricia Regan captures the struggles and triumphs of their family lives and observes how this musical production gives these performers a comfort zone in which they can explore their creative sides. This uplifting film reveals the human stories around autism.
And now, from THE MIRACLE PROJECT comes the new hardcover book SEVEN KEYS TO UNLOCK AUTISM (Jossey-Bass, an imprint of Wiley).
“The Seven Keys is extraordinarily rich in wisdom and honest, practical advice. Welcome this book into your home and you will be inspired. Miracles are never easy, but they are closer than you think.” – Harvey Karp, M.D. creator of the bestselling DVD/Book, The Happiest Toddler on the Block
This book takes readers through seven integrated steps to best access and make meaningful connections with children with autism spectrum disorders – one of the most challenging aspects of the disease. It’s based on the acclaimed author’s approach (Elaine Hall and Diane Issacs) that was featured in the Emmy award-winning documentary Autism: The Musical. SEVEN KEYS TO UNLOCK AUTISM shows teachers and parents how to bring out the best in kids with autism, nurturing their self-expression and boosting their social skills.
The “SEVEN KEYS” came to life when Hall had to train a staff that had very little experience working with children who had autism. She realized she needed to develop a method to help her staff connect with the children, and thus the SEVEN KEYS were born. Throughout the years, Hall and Issacs have watched staff member after staff member develop the skills that allowed them to create meaningful relationships with all the children in the program, as well as benefit from having these relationships in their lives – growing in compassion and understanding.
The book includes practical advice from master teachers and top autism experts such as Dr. Stanley Greenspan, Dr. Ricki Robinson, Dr. Stephen Shore, Dr. Barry Prizant and others.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
ELAINE HALL (“Coach E”) is founder of The Miracle Project. Elaine has received honors from numerous groups including Autism Speaks; served as an ambassador to the UN for International Autism Awareness Day; and keynotes at autism conferences throughout North America. Hall recently co-produced a DVD for clinicians entitled Unlocking the World of Autism, and her memoir, Now I See the Moon, was published by HarperCollins in Summer 2010.
