Autism research and clinical care has strengthened notably at UCSF in recent years. One of the largest-ever genomic investigations of autism continues, with ongoing research now having led to a focus on the identification of a network of genes and biochemical pathways linked to an autism-associated protein: http://j.mp/UCSFnews.
This follows results from another UCSF genetic study that pointed to a greater-than-suspected role for environmental factors in autism. UCSF researchers hope eventually to discover ways in which genes and environment interact to raise autism risk. Ultimately, the goal is to identify ways to prevent autism or to allow those affected to better adapt.
