For most of us, feeding our children nutritious meals to ensure their well being is just a matter of driving to the local grocery store and picking up some fruits and veggies, chicken breast and milk. It’s not something we even think twice about, we just do it…because we can. But there are parents who want to have the ability to do this but can’t – but thanks to Future Fortified they will be getting help! Future Fortified is a campaign of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), and it allows millions of women and children around the globe to have access to critical nutrients they need for health and development.
Moms-to-be, new moms and small children get the essential nutrients they need to grow and thrive. How Future Fortified is doing this is through Home Nutrition Packets – a packet with minerals and vitamins that can be added to the food they may already have – like a bowl of rice. They’re very inexpensive in countries like Bangladesh and Kenya, less than 3¢ a package! That makes mother’s with little income still able to afford them and make sure that their children are getting the nutrients they need, and they themselves as well. There is no special preparation involved. They just sprinkle the package contents in their meals a few times a week.
I’m so excited about this campaign – I see in my own community the results of families who are struggling when it comes to nutrition, and we help where we can, as do other families that we know of. But when entire villages and communities are in the same position – who will help? These Home Nutrition Packets make it so easy for them to integrate the nutrients into the foods they eat on a daily basis. Whether that’s rice, chick peas, flat bread, fruit…whatever!
