I talked with the doctor today. She went over the results of the scan they did on my autism son’s ear. There is a cyst, but it’s not a small one like my daughter’s was. The cyst is big, and is located right up against his eardrum. Taking it out won’t be as simple as my daughter’s surgery.
The doctor said that the cyst needs to be removed, and part of the bone in the ear. This will result in more of a hearing loss in his left ear. He already has a considerable loss of hearing in that ear. She also said that there could be facial nerve damage as a result of the surgery. She said that there will be additional surgeries for reparation.
My son will also need to be monitored closely, in case the cyst grows back. The reparation surgeries will have to wait until the doctor thinks it’s safe. The reparation work will not fix any hearing loss that results from the surgery. It will be to fix any nerve damage, and to prevent further hearing loss.
She mentioned hearing aides. I just don’t think that will be a viable option. Not with my son. The surgery is scheduled for the middle of January. In the meantime, we will have to control the pain with medicine.
Christmas is coming up quicker than I would like. I was hoping to be able to buy my kids presents, but have only been able to get my daughter taken care of. I have bought one small present for my son, but just don’t have the money for more. I feel so bad about this. With everything he is going through, I wanted to give him a special Christmas. My daughter was easy to buy for, because she is so young. I also had a little extra money, and was able to get her presents purchased, without spending that much.
We are also planning to have Christmas Eve at my house this year, with my husband’s side of the family. That’s another expense that my husband and I will be struggling with. Fortunately, I was able to buy a turkey, before Thanksgiving, when it was on sale for .49 a pound. It’s a small one, but it should work. We will also need a ham. I’m keeping a close eye on sales at the grocery store for them. Hoping I can get a good deal on one.
I’ve decorated the house for Christmas this year, using as many decorations as I could. Over the years, I’ve been given decorations from different family members. I’ve bought some, here and there. There may not be that many presents under the tree, but there will be Christmas in our home.
