Southport and Oak Island For Birthday

We took a day and went to the beach for my son’s birthday.  We stopped in Southport, first, and walked on the pier.  The kids enjoyed watching the birds that were amassed all around.  My daughter collected a couple feathers to put into her bird watching book.  My son enjoyed walking up and down the small shoreline, but stayed away from the water.  After that, we headed over to Oak Island, and walked around the beach.  That was my son’s favorite time.  The one thing he wanted to do for his birthday, and I just wish the water wasn’t too cold to swim in.

My daughter took off her socks and shoes, and rolled up her pant legs.  She had a great time running in and out of the water.  The rest of us walked up and down the beach, looking for interesting shells.  I had to keep an eye on my son, as he wanted to walk alone, and kept getting a good distance away from me and my husband.  Several times, I had to run and turn him around so that we could walk towards my husband.

It was a beautiful day.  The sun kept going in and out, and the temperature was perfect for a day outside.  No one seemed to mind that we didn’t visit the aquarium this year.  My husband got to spend a little time with his brother, and have a brief visit with his mom.  It’s been a rough couple of months, but this past week was really tough on my husband.  He’s had to work a lot of overtime, and I could see that it was tiring him out.  I was happy to see him spend a day of just relaxing.

Everything was perfect, except for a little hiccup on the way home.  You would have thought it was a holiday weekend.  The cops had people pulled over for speeding on the way and back from the beach.  My husband pointed out several on the way home.  Well, I shouldn’t have been too surprised when my husband started pulling off to the side of the road.  I was like, “Really? You were speeding?  After all the cops we passed?”  I didn’t give him too hard a time.  He knew I wasn’t happy when I looked at the $218 ticket.  But, I was not going to let it ruin a great day, and let him off with a quick, and calm couple of sentences of my displeasure.

I’ll admit, while I gave my short lecture, I was also smiling.  I couldn’t help it.  I was in a good mood from being at the beach with my family.  I was relaxed, and stress-free.  I couldn’t help by find the humor in the situation, even though part of me was wondering how we were going to pay that ticket.  If you get a chance to go to NC, both Southport and Oak Island are great family vacation spots.  We absolutely love going there for the day or weekend.
